Right here Craigie! Where’s Your Love?, zo heet het nieuwe nummer van Craig David.
And all I can say is … IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME!
Hij brengt het net zo lekker als die cuts waar ik op los ging, FRESH outta Highschool in the clubs chillin’ with the homies. *sigh* How often do I reminisce about those days, ow let me count the ways hehehehe. “Re- wi- nd, when the crowd say “BO SELECTA”!’. Where’s Your Love, takes me back, met een beetje die turn of the centry UK-garage 2step flavour, maar dan in een ‘0-8 jasje. Op 17 November dropt hij een nieuw album ‘Insomnia’ een soort ‘best of’ maar dan anders.
Dus hier een cut, to warp me back to Y2K and de music video for ‘Where’s Your Love?’ to bring me back in the now. “W-where, where’s it gone, where’s it gone (Got an old school feelin’ again)”
Ik kon niet wachten, niet wachten tot het eindelijk hier te zien was in een Pathe of een small independent theatre near you. Wat hoogst waarschijnlijk niet eens zou gebeuren. Films van dit kaliber belanden in de lage landen gelijk in de schappen van de videotheek, of de woensdag avond film op RTL 4 (hebben ze die nog? Of zijn die verschoven naar NET 5?) Aangezien de Videoland of de Filmclubs van deze tijd het waarschijnlijk niet zouden inkopen, en ik maar zou moeten hopen dat ze het met een ‘3 voor 25′ sticker zouden aanbieden in de Free Record Shop of wie weet Media Markt, lieten ze mij geen keus.
Ik heb het hier over The Secret Life Of Bees. Dit boek door Sue Monk Kidd, is sinds ik het heb gelezen -augustus dit jaar- een van mijn favoriete boeken alle tijden geworden. Afgelopen vrijdag ging de verfilming van dit boek (door Gina ‘Love&Basketball’ Prince-Bythewood) in premiere in the USA. En gierig als ik was kon ik niet wachten tot het eindelijk hier verkrijgbaar was, dus ging ik het net op op zoek naar de torrent voor de film. Gister, had ik het eindelijk gevonde, een cam welleswaar, maar ach, het was eigenlijk best een ‘watchable’ cam.
Was de film mijn gierigheid waard? euh …. JA! Het is echt een wijven film, but hey last time I checked I am a female hehehe. Ik vond de film mijn 110 minuten waard, helaas deelt niet iedereen mijn mening. De film scoort net een mager zesje, en er wordt gezegd dat het te overgoten is met honing (hey wat wil je; waar zijn bijen bekend om ;) ). Anyway, zoals elke verfilming van een boek, het zal nooit zijn zoals als je geliefde novel, however, Gina Price-Bythewood heeft een aardige rolprent uitgerold, een topcast. Uhu, that’s right je hoort het me zeggen, shoot I even liked Alicia’s performance. Echt aangenaam verrast, dat na die twee eerdere films van Ms. Keys toen ik dacht; Hmmm, denk niet dat je een triple threat wordt, je kan zingen, je kan componeren, je kan def niet dansen, en acteren I dunno. Maar na de rol van June Boatwright, who knows, I was convinced. Queen Latifah killed it, Jennifer Hudson killed it, Sophie Okonedo killed it, allemaal toppers. Dan heb je nog Dakota Fanning, zooo. Dit is volgens mij voor het eerst dat ik haar een ‘echte’ rol zie spelen, mark my words, she’ll get an oscar soon (maybe not for this film, but soon).
O, ja, waarom ik deze film nice vind, naast het feit dat het verhaal me raakt, en cast tight is, is the musical score. Ik heb nergens een soundtrack hier van kunnen vinden. Ik denk eerlijk gezegd dat die niet gemaakt is, hoe dan ook een staan een paar ille cuts op. Sinds het verhaal in de jaren zestig afspeeld kom je wat Motown klasiekers tegen zoals The Four Tops - I Need Your Loving, The Supremes - Come See About Me en The Impressions - It’s Alright , dus dat zit wel snor. Wat mijn aangenaam veraste ook een paar hedendaagse artiesten een appearance maken, waaronder een paar van mijn favorieten; India.Arie - Beautiful, Raphael Saadiq - Keep Marchin’, Lizz Wright - A Song For Mia.
En een aangename verassing, een artiest genaamd Joe Purdy. Ik kende hem nog niet maar het nummer Mary dat in de film voor kwam was zeer nice. Daarbij popte er bij de aftiteling een nieuw nummer van Alicia Keys langs ‘Doncho Know’, schijnt op een reprint van haar derder studio album As I Am uit te komen in novemer.
Dus conclusie: ook al scoort ie een mager zesje I still dig the Secret life of Bees. Een film waar Alicia blijkt te kunnen acteren, en Dakota Fanning nogmaals laat zien dat ze niet alleen een kind actrice is, ik een paar traantje inhield, en zoals verwacht Queen, Jennifer, Sophie en Gina deden waar ze goed in zijn.
When Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes died in 2002, I cried, well shed some tears, fudge it … I confess I cried, and you know what, I’m not even ashamed to admit I did. See, when I was a lil kid back in the mid nineties, I adored TLC. TLC was and is the only music act (group or solo) that I was ever ever a fan of. Especially Left Eye, she was my favorite, yeah sure T-Boz was cool, never really liked Chilli but maynnne … Left Eye was the shizzz! She was funny cool and crazy (and flamable) and she rapped. I knew all her raps front to back. She was such an important musical aspect for lil’ Kimzay as a child growing up. I was upset when I heard she died, ’cause it kind of felt that she was part of my child/teen hood life.(Silly I know)
Less than a year before Lisa passed away, she released her first and only solo album ‘Supernova’. Which to date, is one of my favorite albums. Not because it’s a masterpiece and must be part of everyone’s record collection. Nope, it’s a very good album, no doubt about it, it’s very inspirational. The reason this one is on my fave list, is personal, like many favorite albums are. For the past 6 years I thought that this would be the only solo album Lisa Lopes would make, until TODAY!
Today, while reading my daily RSS feeds, I read a post on NME.com. In early 2009 ‘Eye-Legacy’ will be released. Eye-Legacy will include a cut with another late great Tupac Shakur called ‘Legendary’ (what’s in a name). The first single will be one with Missy Elliott.
